    Penske Motor Group (“PMG”) is the shared services entity for an industry-leading, privately owned group of five automotive dealerships in California and Texas. The group includes Longo Toyota (the largest dealership in the world) and Longo Lexus, both on the same campus (El Monte, CA - 14 miles East of Los Angeles). It also includes Lexus of Stevens Creek (San Jose, CA), Mercedes-Benz of Marin (San Rafael, CA), and Longo Toyota of Prosper (Prosper, TX - just North of Dallas). In total, we employ almost 1,300 employees. PMG’s business office is located on the Longo campus.


    PMG is currently seeking a Director of Human Resources to lead the HR Department of seven team members, spread out among the various dealerships. This strategic leader will help shape HR policies and programming and design and implement new initiatives. We seek a best practices leader who enjoys getting “in the trenches” and naturally operates close to the business and our team members.


    The new Director will also manage PMG’s Wellness and Learning and Development programs which directly affect our team members’ engagement and health.

    Finally, we need someone with a strong business acumen who can adapt the HR function and think innovatively to meet the changing needs of the business in a tight labor market and rapidly evolving US automotive industry. This highly visible position will report to the VP and General Counsel and will function as a strategic advisor to the entire senior leadership team.


    Day-to-Day Management of the HR Department and Core Functions

    • Evaluate and direct the HR Department’s function and performance
    • Document HR policies and ensure they are administered fairly and consistently
    • Advise the business and partner with Legal on all applicable California, Texas and federal employment laws, including wage and hour, and leave laws
    • Work with PMG’s Talent Acquisition Manager to optimize recruiting and retention strategy and practices
    • Assist with community events and sponsorship
    • Conduct employee investigations and advise on escalated employee issues
    • Oversee employee benefit and wellness programs and annual enrollment
    • Administer the annual employee survey
    • Manage the Wellness Program and increase team member participation
    • Manage Learning and Development and our training platform called “Penske College Online”
    • Help inject some levity into the workplace by participating in the Fun Committee
    • Prepare a HR budget and manage departmental expenses

    Thought-Leadership and Strategic Vision

    • Develop a multiyear strategy on HR technology, systems, and tools to gain efficiencies, reduce risk, and improve team member experience
    • Analyze key metrics designed to measure team member performance, engagement, retention, and the overall happiness of our team member base
    • Continually assess the competitiveness of all programs, compensation, and practices against relevant comparable companies, industries and markets
    • Partner with the business to evolve the Learning & Development function to better suit our business needs and to provide a more effective solution for our team members


    • May require up to 30% travel to our dealerships in Northern California and Prosper, Texas
    • Perform other duties as required



    • 8+ years human resources generalist or related experience preferably in a multi-site/location, fast-paced retail environment
    • 3+ years in managing, leading, and developing staff professionals
    • Bachelor’s degree is required
    • Deep experience with various HRIS and other HR-related software and tools and implementation of such platforms are a plus
    • Strong working knowledge of state and federal employment and leave laws (e.g., FLSA, FMLA, ADAAA), wage and hour laws, etc.
    • Meticulous attention to detail
    • High sense of urgency and ability to prioritize
    • Demonstrated ability to partner closely with Legal to understand guidance and translate into practice
    • Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels within the organization
    • SHRM Certified Senior Professional (SPHR) preferred
